UK Minister of State for the Middle East Stephen Doughty has joined Foreign Secretary Ed Miliband in condemning Israel’s decision to launch a construction tender for the E1 settlement project in the occupied West Bank.
– Doughty called on the Israeli government on Thursday to urgently reverse the move, describing it as a “deliberate and destructive act designed to undermine a two-state solution”.
– The comments followed a sharp rebuke from Miliband, who warned that the E1 project risks severing connections between East Jerusalem and the occupied est Bank, directly endangering a two-state solution. Miliband demanded that Israeli Foreign Minister Gideon Sa’ar halt the project immediately, calling all settlements a flagrant breach of international law.
– Britain summoned Israel’s chargé d’affaires to lodge a formal protest. Miliband confirmed the UK will announce new measures within weeks targeting illegal settlement expansion.
