
Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen believes that a US attack on Greenland would be tantamount to the end of NATO.
– “If the United States decides to militarily attack another NATO country, then it’s all over,” Frederiksen told
– “That means our NATO, and therefore the security that has been guaranteed since the end of World War II.”
– Greenland is not an independent member of NATO, but is part of the military alliance through Denmark’s membership.
– Frederiksen said that if Trump were to claim Greenland for the US, it would have to be taken seriously.
– “We will not accept a situation in which we and Greenland are threatened in this way,” she added.
– She received backing from the EU and many European countries on Monday, including Britain, France, and Germany.
– “We in NATO are united in our need to strengthen security in the High North.” However, one cannot simply go and take over part of another country’s territory.
– Greenland’s Prime Minister Jens-Frederik Nielsen attempted to defuse the conflict on Monday. He stated that his country did not expect American intervention despite the latest US offer.
– “Greenland cannot be compared to Venezuela,” Nielsen said. “We are a democratic country.”
– Following the capture of Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro, the wife of a senior Trump advisor shared a picture of a map of Greenland in US colors, captioned “soon.
– “We need Greenland from a national security standpoint,” Trump said. The island is of great strategic importance, but is currently surrounded by Russian and Chinese ships, Trump claimed.
– The US maintains an important military base in Greenland, the Pituffik Space Base .
– Trump also underscored his statement with mockery of Denmark . “Do you know what Denmark did recently? To increase security in Greenland, they added another dog sled. It’s true. They thought that was a great reinforcement.”
