Nigeria 🇳🇬 calls for a more resilient, self-reliant and African-led peace and security architecture.
H.E. Ambassador Bianca Odumegwu-Ojukwu, Honourable Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Federal Republic of #Nigeria, highlighted the increasingly sophisticated nature of threats facing the continent, the erosion of multilateralism and critical gaps affecting early warning, peace operations financing and counter-terrorism.
She underscored the need for practical, action-oriented solutions across mediation and preventive diplomacy, counter-terrorism, peace support operations and financing.
🕊️ Early warning must lead to action – Mediation must deliver results.
H.E. Ambassador Bianca Odumegwu-Ojukwu highlighted Nigeria’s #perspectives on strengthening the Continental Early Warning System, improving mediation coordination, establishing a vetted roster of deployable African mediators and technical experts, and strengthening national peace infrastructures.
On counter-terrorism, she called for addressing local grievances, youth unemployment and community resilience, while leveraging the AU Counter-Terrorism Centre as a continental focal point.
🕊️ Peace Support Operations require predictable and sustainable financing.
H.E. Ambassador Bianca Odumegwu-Ojukwu called for the urgent application of #UNSCR2719 to secure predictable funding for AU-led operations and for the operationalisation of the African Standby Force and its regional standby arrangements.
She also stressed that the #AUPeaceFund should not be seen as a replacement for United Nations obligations to fund conflicts on the continent.
