Ahead of the US president’s visit to Ankara, Israel’s prime minister says he opposes the sale of F-35 warplanes to Turkiye.
– “It is a country that occupies half of the island of Cyprus. They speak openly about occupying Jerusalem. I do not think this is a country that should be supplied with F-35s. They supported Hamas and did nothing in the face of Iran,” Benjamin Netanyahu told Fox News.
– While Israel has had an antagonistic relationship with Iran since the 1979 Islamic Revolution, Israel-Turkiye relations have been more pragmatic.
– However, since coming to power in the early 2000s, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has been increasingly critical of Israel over its continued repression of Palestinians.
