Ahead of the US president’s visit to Ankara, Israel’s prime minister says he opposes the sale of F-35 warplanes to Turkiye.

“It is a country that occupies half of the island of Cyprus. They speak openly about occupying Jerusalem. I do not think this is a country that should be supplied with F-35s. They supported Hamas and did nothing in the face of Iran,” Benjamin Netanyahu told Fox News.

While Israel has had an antagonistic relationship with Iran since the 1979 Islamic Revolution, Israel-Turkiye relations have been more pragmatic.

– However, since coming to power in the early 2000s, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has been increasingly critical of Israel over its continued repression of Palestinians.
