Lebanon’s Foreign Minister Youssef Rajji has urged Canada to support Beirut’s efforts to end Israel’s occupation and bring all weapons under state control during talks with Canadian Senate Speaker Raymonde Gagne.
– Rajji called for continued support for the Lebanese army, describing it as “the main pillar that enables the state to extend stability”, Lebanon’s National News Agency reported.
– “Lebanon cannot enjoy prosperity and stability while there are armed groups operating outside legitimacy,” he said.
– The two discussed negotiations between Lebanon and Israel, as well as the period following the conclusion of the UNIFIL peacekeeping mission. Gagne reaffirmed Canada’s support and asked how Ottawa could offer further assistance.
– At a separate meeting with Arab League ambassadors in Ottawa, Rajji said the framework agreement signed with Israel “is not a final treaty, but a framework for future negotiations”.
– “Negotiations are the only solution to stop Israeli attacks and achieve withdrawal,” he said.
