Japan-Iran Foreign Ministers’ Telephone Call

On October 1, commencing at 5:10 p.m. for 20 minutes, Mr. MOTEGI Toshimitsu, Minister for Foreign Affairs of Japan, held a telephone call with H.E. Dr. Seyyed Abbas Araghchi, Minister of Foreign Affairs of Iran.

  1. Minister MOTEGI, noting that indirect talks between the United States and Iran have been underway since last week, stated that Japan has made consistent efforts toward an early de-escalation and stabilization of the situation and a diplomatic resolution, and said that Japan would also like to build momentum for diplomacy together with the countries concerned. At the same time, he strongly requested Iran to continue to show maximum flexibility.

Minister MOTEGI, while referring to the overview of Foreign Ministers’ Meeting “Reinforcing Maritime Cooperation to Achieve a Secure and Stable Maritime Domain” which Japan co-hosted in New York on the occasion of the recent UN General Assembly, reiterated that it is important to restore free and safe navigation through the Strait of Hormuz and the Bab el-Mandeb Strait, and to discuss the future of the Strait of Hormuz with the entire international community. He then strongly requested Iran to respond the matter constructively.
  3. In response, Foreign Minister Araghchi explained the current status of talks with the US and Iran’s position. Both ministers confirmed that they would continue to maintain close communication towards a diplomatic resolution of the situation.
