Today, I held a telephone conversation with Prime Minister Sharif of Pakistan.

From my side, I expressed respect for the mediation efforts by Prime Minister Sharif and other Pakistani officials regarding the U.S.-Iran talks held in Islamabad, and stated our support for these efforts.

I also conveyed Japan’s position that the most important thing moving forward is to actually achieve de-escalation of the situation, including ensuring the safety of navigation in the Strait of Hormuz, and that it is essential to reach a final agreement at an early date through these talks.

Furthermore, I explained that Japan has thus far maintained communications at the summit level with both the United States and Iran, and has been intensifying diplomatic efforts toward the early de-escalation of the situation.

On that basis, I emphasized that it is an urgent task to restore stability to the Strait of Hormuz, which is a vital hub for global logistics and an international public good, and that it is indispensable to ensure free and safe navigation for ships of all countries, including Japan and other Asian nations, as soon as possible.

From Prime Minister Sharif, there was an explanation regarding the U.S.-Iran talks held in Islamabad and Pakistan’s diplomatic initiatives, along with a statement expressing his desire to continue cooperating with Japan toward the early de-escalation of the situation and ensuring the safety of navigation in the Strait of Hormuz.

Thus far, the government has been advancing diplomatic initiatives in close coordination with the international community. I intend to continue proactively advancing these efforts, including on my part.
