US Ambassador to the UN Mike Waltz said on Sunday that the Iranians were in a bit of “chaos” noting that Tehran doesn’t have many cards left to play.
– Speaking with CBS News’ Face The Nation, Waltz also pointed to a lack of trust with the Iranian side as it remains to be seen whether Iran will join an anticipated second round of talks in Pakistan this week.
– “The Iranian side is in a bit of chaos,” due to “the devastating strikes on their leadership,” Waltz said.
– He added that the US is “never going to take an approach of trust” with Iran. “Any deal that comes out of this will have to absolutely be verifiable and be enforceable,” Waltz added.
– President Donald Trump on Sunday said that US representatives would travel to Pakistan for a new round of talks with Iran that reportedly is going to be held Tuesday. Iran, however, insisted on Monday that it has no plans to join.
– The first round of negotiations last weekend was led by US Vice President JD Vance, but talks failed to reach an agreement.
– A White House official said on Sunday that Vance will also head this week’s delegation that will also include Trump’s envoy Steve Witkoff and son-in-law Jared Kushner.
– “The Iranian economy is devastated, and they’ve never been – I can tell you, here at the United Nations – they’ve never been more diplomatically isolated,” Waltz said. “So Iran does not have the cards and we are confident they will come to the table, and finally give up their obsession with having a nuclear weapon.”
