Iran will reopen the Strait of Hormuz within seven days if the United States eases military pressure and lifts its blockade on Iranian ports, the Reuters news agency and Japan’s Kyodo News agency have separately quoted a senior Iranian official as saying.
– The Japanese agency reported the development first, calling it “Tehran’s ramped-up efforts to revive negotiations with Washington”.
– The proposal, which has already been conveyed to the US through mediators, the official told Kyodo, calls for renewed talks aimed at reaching a permanent end to hostilities between the two countries.
– Reuters cited its source as saying the Iranian delegation to the United Nations General Assembly in New York has full authority to revive diplomacy with the US.
– “The UN General Assembly is a golden opportunity for the US to return to diplomacy”, the official told Reuters, adding that Tehran would welcome a revival of diplomacy if Washington takes tangible steps.
– It was unclear if it was the same senior Iranian official who spoke to both news agencies.
