France is seeking to work with India to ensure freedom of navigation in the Strait of Hormuz, according to a statement by the French Foreign Ministry.
– It said Foreign Minister Jean-Noel Barrot held a meeting with his Indian counterpart, Subrahmanyam Jaishankar, on the sidelines of the UNGA in New York. During the meeting, they “underscored the imperative of ensuring freedom of navigation” in the Strait of Hormuz and the Bab al-Mandeb, the ministry said.
– Barrot proposed that India work jointly with France as the straits are “crucial to the stability and prosperity of Europe and Asia”. He also pointed out the Franco-British initiative launched to ensure freedom of navigation in the Strait of Hormuz.
– Barrot and Jaishankar reiterated France and India’s commitment to international law and their joint support for “effective and reformed multilateralism”, according to the statement.
