Former Sudanese Prime Minister Abdalla Hamdok met with United Nations Deputy Secretary-General Amina Mohammed in New York on Sunday to discuss plans to end the country’s war and accelerate humanitarian relief, his coalition said.
– Hamdok, who chairs the Civil Democratic Alliance of Revolutionary Forces (Sumood), held talks at U.N. headquarters as part of a diplomatic push during meetings with international officials.
– The war between the Sudanese army and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF), which broke out in April 2023, has displaced millions and pushed swathes of the population toward famine.
– In a statement, Sumood said the discussions centred on ground and humanitarian developments, highlighting the urgent need for unhindered aid delivery across the country.
– Hamdok’s delegation urged the U.N. to coordinate fragmented international and regional mediation efforts, linking humanitarian, security and political tracks into a unified process.
– The alliance added that lasting peace requires a Sudanese-led civilian political transition that protects national unity and sovereignty.
– Mohammed welcomed the efforts of Sudanese civilian groups to end the fighting and engaged positively with the delegation’s proposals, according to the coalition’s statement.
– The U.N. has consistently pressed for an immediate ceasefire, civilian protection and expanded humanitarian corridors, alongside efforts to forge a lasting political settlement.
