Disarming Hezbollah after three decades of institutional neglect of the Lebanese armed forces will not happen overnight, independent Lebanese MP Najat Aoun Saliba has warned.
– She added that the government was taking the right steps.
– “It is going to be very difficult to say overnight that the Lebanese armed forces are now at the forefront, when they do not have enough resources or manpower after 30 years of a militia being strengthened above them,” she told Al Jazeera.
– She said Lebanon’s president and PM, with international support, were calling for resources, financial assistance, and the capacity to dismantle Hezbollah’s armaments and ballistic missiles.
– “We cannot put the blame on the Lebanese armed forces. They are doing an excellent job, but they need help.”
– On suggestions that Lebanon could join the Abraham Accords as a reward for disarming Hezbollah, Saliba said “Lebanon will decide its own fate.
– “Lebanon is part of the Arab League, and I do not think it will do anything unilaterally without consulting its friends there. It is probably premature to talk about this.”
