CELEBRATING THE GREAT DAY OF THE BUDDHA
Under UNGA Resolution 54/115 of the 54th session, the Permanent Missions of Sri Lanka and Thailand annually organize commemorative events at UN Headquarters to mark the “Great Day of the Buddha.”
At this year’s event, the UN Secretary-General, along with representatives, and Permanent Representatives from Bhutan, Vietnam, Mongolia, Myanmar, Nepal, Kyrgyzstan, Laos, Indonesia, Pakistan, Russia, Singapore, the Philippines, India, and Japan introduced and spoke on the teachings and values proclaimed by the Buddha.
Permanent Representative N. Ankhsbayar stated in his speech that the Buddha’s teachings on loving-kindness and compassion, non-violence, and peaceful coexistence serve as guiding principles for fostering dialogue, mutual understanding, and unity among nations and peoples.
He further emphasized that commemorating this day is an event that underscores the importance of enhancing the international community’s shared moral responsibility to support peace, human dignity, and unity of minds, in alignment with the purposes and principles of the UN Charter.
