Wang Yi met with British Foreign Secretary Miliband
On the morning of July 23, 2026, Wang Yi, member of the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee and Foreign Minister, met with British Foreign Secretary David Miliband in Manila.
Wang Yi congratulated Miliband on his new appointment and stated that as major world powers and permanent members of the UN Security Council, China and the UK’s relationship transcends the bilateral scope and has global influence. China values the UK’s statement regarding the new government’s commitment to maintaining consistency and stability in its China policy and hopes the UK will adhere to the one-China principle, safeguard the political foundation of bilateral relations, and provide a fair, just, and non-discriminatory business environment for Chinese companies in the UK, avoiding the over-security-ization of trade and economic issues. China looks forward to close high-level exchanges with the new UK government, consolidating political mutual trust, deepening pragmatic cooperation, and promoting the continuous development of the comprehensive strategic partnership. President Xi Jinping’s concept of building a community with a shared future for mankind and the four global initiatives address the international community’s deficits in peace, development, security, and governance, clarifying China’s diplomatic philosophy and goals, and providing important public goods to the world. China and the UK should work together to overcome contradictions and differences, jointly uphold multilateralism, support the revitalization of the UN’s core position, oppose unilateral bullying and protectionism, and make greater contributions to world peace and development.
Miliband stated that the new British government highly values its relationship with China and will continue to build a long-term, stable, and comprehensive strategic partnership with China, which is in the strategic interests of both sides. As major world powers with significant influence, the UK and China should continue to strengthen cooperation on global security, health, and development issues. The UK’s policy on the Taiwan issue, which has remained unchanged since the establishment of diplomatic relations, is consistent with its long-standing policy. The UK is willing to strengthen exchanges at all levels with China, expand cooperation in areas such as climate change, and enhance multilateral communication and collaboration to promote the long-term, healthy, and stable development of UK-China relations.
The two sides also exchanged views on international and regional issues such as the situation in the Middle East and the Gulf.
