On September 21, 2026, Wang Yi, member of the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee and Foreign Minister, spoke by phone with German Foreign Minister Wadephul at the latter’s request.
Wang Yi stated that China and Germany are major world economies and comprehensive strategic partners. Faced with the current impact of unilateralism and anti-globalization, it is necessary for both sides to strengthen strategic communication, enhance mutual trust, deepen pragmatic cooperation, and send a positive signal that China and Germany jointly uphold multilateralism and free trade. This will boost external confidence in the development of China-Germany relations and play a constructive role in the development of China-EU relations. Strengthening mutually beneficial cooperation between China and Germany is in the interests of both sides and is a correct and common choice. We should cherish the progress made so far, promote deeper and more practical China-Germany cooperation, and continuously achieve new results.
Wang Yi pointed out that the one-China principle is the political foundation of China-Germany relations. He hoped that Germany would cherish and consolidate the tradition of mutual trust and friendship between China and Germany, adhere to the one-China principle, and take concrete actions to safeguard China-Germany relations and peace and stability across the Taiwan Strait, creating the necessary conditions for high-level exchanges between the two sides. China and the EU are comprehensive strategic partners, and China and the EU should not engage in a trade war. China has consistently advocated that both sides meet each other halfway and find solutions to their respective concerns through dialogue and consultation. He hoped that Germany would maintain a rational and pragmatic attitude, play a positive role within the EU, and promote the EU’s adherence to free trade, rejection of protectionism, and commitment to the right path of open cooperation and dialogue and consultation.
Wadephul stated that German-Chinese relations have maintained a good momentum of development in recent years. Germany looks forward to further strengthening high-level exchanges with China, holding a new round of German-Chinese intergovernmental consultations, deepening practical cooperation in areas such as trade and economy, and continuously elevating the level of German-Chinese relations. Germany firmly adheres to the one-China policy, and this position will not change. Given the current international situation facing a series of new threats and challenges, Germany hopes that China will leverage its influence in international and regional affairs to work with Germany to explore solutions. Germany supports the EU and China in properly handling their differences through dialogue and is willing to play a positive role in this regard.
Wang Yi stated that the important consensus reached between China and Germany today is to adhere to dialogue and consultation in resolving China-EU economic and trade issues.
The two sides also exchanged views on the situation in Iran and the crisis in Ukraine. Wang Yi reiterated China’s principled position, stating that China will only do things that are conducive to peace and is always committed to promoting peace talks. He expressed China’s willingness to continue strengthening communication and coordination with the EU and making joint efforts.
