Cambodia and Malaysia have reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening cooperation as preparations are underway to commemorate the 70th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations.
– The commitment was underscored during a meeting between Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation Minister Prak Sokhonn and Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim at the 3rd meeting of the Cambodia-Malaysia Joint Commission for Bilateral Cooperation (JCBC) in Kuala Lumpur on Monday.
– Sokhonn thanked Malaysia for its active role in promoting peace and long-term stability in the region, especially regarding the Cambodia-Thailand border issue, through the Kuala Lumpur Peace Accord and the establishment of the ASEAN Observer Team.
– Both sides confirmed preparations to commemorate the 70th anniversary of diplomatic relations in 2027, while pledging to work closely to further strengthen their partnership and contribute to peace, stability and prosperity in ASEAN.
– Yesterday, Sokhonn and Malaysian Foreign Affairs Minister Mohamad Hasan co-chaired the JCBC meeting, where both sides renewed their commitment to expand cooperation across a number of priority areas including trade and investment, agriculture, education, security, defence, labour, tourism and people-to-people exchanges.
– The two sides also signed the agreed minutes of the JCBC meeting, which will serve as a roadmap for guiding bilateral cooperation.
– International affairs analyst Hoeun Menghong noted that relations are expanding across politics, the economy, trade, investment, security and ASEAN cooperation.
– “Cambodia-Malaysia relations are moving towards a deeper level of cooperation and are increasingly important not only for bilateral interests but also for ASEAN as a whole,” he said.
– “If both sides continue to strengthen diplomatic, economic and security cooperation, the relationship could become an important component in promoting ASEAN unity and peace in the region.”
