Parliamentarians from BRICS member countries are calling for comprehensive reform of the United Nations and its Security Council, according to a joint declaration issued following the 12th BRICS Parliamentary Forum.

– “We emphasize the urgent need to reform the existing international peace and security architecture, which inevitably requires strengthening multilateralism. We advocate for comprehensive UN reform, including of the Security Council. This reform should make the UN more just, equitable, democratic, representative, effective, and efficient so that it better reflects contemporary realities and the needs of the international community,” the document noted.

– The parliaments of the BRICS countries reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening multilateralism and upholding international law, and pointed to the central role of the UN in the international system. According to the document, within such a system, sovereign states must cooperate to maintain international peace and security, promote sustainable development, and protect democracy, human rights, and fundamental freedoms for all.
