Statement by the Chairperson of the African Union Commission on the Situation at the Border between Chad and Sudan.
The Chairperson of the African Union Commission, H.E. Mr. Mahmoud Ali Youssouf, is following with concern the reports of airstrikes that occurred on 20 August 2026 in the Ennedi-Est region, within the territory of the Republic of Chad, in connection with the ongoing conflict in Sudan.
The Chairperson of the Commission Mahmoud Ali Youssouf reaffirms the African Union’s commitment to the strict respect of the sovereignty, unity, and territorial integrity of its Member States, as well as to the principle of the inviolability of borders.
He calls on all concerned parties to exercise the utmost restraint, to refrain from any action likely to heighten tensions between neighboring States, and to take the necessary measures to prevent the Sudanese conflict from extending beyond Sudan’s borders.
The Chairperson of the Commission underscores, in this regard, the need to strengthen dialogue and cooperation between States in the region in order to prevent cross-border incidents, secure common borders, and reduce the risks of regional escalation.
He finally reiterates the African Union Commission’s readiness to support the States concerned in any initiative that could contribute to de-escalation, the prevention of new incidents, and the preservation of regional peace and stability.
