South Korean President Lee Jae Myung said on Saturday that mechanisms must be instituted to manage tensions with North Korea.
– In a speech marking the anniversary of Korea’s liberation from Japanese colonial rule, Lee called for talks with North Korea and other concerned parties to end the 1950-1953 Korean War, which was stopped by a ceasefire, not a peace treaty.
– Lee said the Korean Peninsula’s unstable armistice needed to be transformed into a “peace regime” and that dialogue could also help concerned parties discuss ways to curb North Korea’s nuclear capabilities.
