A political tug of war is unfolding between the Donald Trump administration and a broader bloc consisting of European political circles, sections of the Indian establishment, and the Democratic Party, with both sides pursuing sharply different objectives. For the Trump administration, the priority appears to be building political legacy, consolidating power, extracting maximum economic and strategic advantage from rivals, and exerting relentless pressure on opponents while Trump still holds the US presidency.
On the other side, Trump’s opponents appear focused less on immediate confrontation and more on political endurance. Their strongest weapon is the belief that Trump can eventually be removed from power through electoral setbacks, institutional pressure, or potentially impeachment after the midterm elections. This camp increasingly appears to view time, political attrition, and institutional resistance as strategic assets.
The major mistake the Trump administration may be making is turning the confrontation primarily into an economic competition through tariffs, trade battles, and financial pressure rather than recognising that its opponents are playing a political power game centred on weakening and eventually dismissing adversaries from authority altogether. In this view, while Trump’s camp remains focused on economic leverage, the opposing side appears more concentrated on political survival, institutional influence, and long term control of power.
The Trump administration may ultimately realise that economic pressure alone cannot secure long term political survival. If the real battle is over institutional control and political authority, then Trump’s most effective counterstrategy would be to confront the conflict on the same terrain as his opponents by systematically removing adversaries from positions of influence and authority altogether.
