The humanitarian situation in Yemen’s Taiz has worsened as road closures block essential goods and services from reaching millions, the UN has warned.
– UN spokesperson Stephane Dujarric told a news conference, citing colleagues on the ground, that “road closures and insecurity are preventing vital supplies, including fuel, from entering the city and surrounding areas”.
– Despite efforts by the UN to provide aid in Taiz, it “cannot meet these needs if essential supplies are prevented from reaching the city”, Dujarric said.
– “Roads must open,” he added.
– The Houthis have surrounded the city of Taiz since early October, blocking the road that links it to the temporary capital of the Yemeni government, Aden.
– The UN Refugee Agency (UNHCR) said on Tuesday that more than 250,000 people have been internally displaced in Yemen since fighting reignited between Houthi rebels and Yemeni government forces in July.
– Taiz accounts for 76 percent of departures and hosts 52 percent of those newly displaced, according to UNHCR.
