Today, at 5:30 p.m., I held a phone conversation with Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, who plays an important role in the Middle East region.
On my side, I first expressed my gratitude for President Erdoğan’s condolences regarding the Kumamoto Earthquake.
In addition, with regard to strengthening the “strategic partnership” between Japan and Turkey, I stated my desire to further develop cooperation in areas such as education, security, and the economy, including the opening this autumn of the “Turkey-Japan Institute of Technology.”
Regarding the situation in Iran, I stated that I highly appreciate Turkey’s dedicated efforts in playing a mediating role, and that Japan, too, will work closely with Turkey and the international community to persistently make every possible diplomatic effort.
I also emphasized the importance of ensuring free and safe navigation in the Strait of Hormuz without any additional costs.
From President Erdoğan, there was a statement that our views on the Strait of Hormuz are in complete agreement.
Additionally, there was a comment expressing a desire to further promote cooperative relations between the two countries across a wide range of fields, including the economy and security.
Taking into account today’s exchange of views as well, we will continue to closely collaborate with Turkey not only on bilateral relations but also on regional and international affairs.
