Wang Yi met with Iranian Foreign Minister Araghzi

On July 24, 2026, Wang Yi, member of the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee and Foreign Minister, met with Iranian Foreign Minister Araqchi in Kyrgyzstan on the sidelines of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation Foreign Ministers’ Meeting.

Wang Yi stated that China is deeply concerned about the recent escalation of tensions in the Middle East and the Gulf region. The Memorandum of Understanding signed just over a month ago is a valuable outcome of multilateral mediation and embodies the peaceful aspirations of Iran and the people of the Middle East for an end to conflict and for a stable nation; it should not be abandoned. The door to negotiations, once opened, should not be closed, and as long as there is hope for peace, it should not be abandoned. The urgent task is to adhere to the direction of resolving disputes through negotiations and return to implementing the consensus reached in the Memorandum. As a comprehensive strategic partner, China firmly supports Iran in safeguarding its sovereignty, security, and national dignity. China will uphold President Xi Jinping’s four-point proposal for maintaining and promoting peace and stability in the Middle East, continue to support the mediation efforts of Pakistan and other parties, resume dialogue and negotiations among the parties involved as soon as possible, properly handle the Strait of Hormuz issue, promote the improvement of relations among neighboring countries, jointly seek collective security for the Gulf states, and contribute to the early restoration of peace and tranquility in the Middle East.

Araghchi briefed the delegation on the latest situation in the Middle East and the Gulf region, stating that the US had violated the memorandum of understanding reached by both sides, leading to an escalation of tensions. Iran’s willingness to negotiate has never changed, and it does not wish for the conflict to continue. Iran urged the US to honor its commitments, exercise restraint, and work with Iran to find a reasonable solution. At this critical juncture, it is crucial for Iran and China, as comprehensive strategic partners, to strengthen communication and coordination. Iran appreciates China’s consistent objective and impartial stance and its unwavering commitment to promoting peace and ending hostilities. Iran looks forward to China continuing to play an important role in easing tensions and de-escalating the situation.
