Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy will meet US President Donald Trump in Washington on Tuesday, a White House official said, amid renewed efforts to end the war with Russia.
– “President Zelensky is slated to meet with President Trump at the White House on Tuesday,” the White House official told AFP on condition of anonymity on Friday.
– Zelenskyy said this week he had spoken with Trump’s envoy Steve Witkoff and the US president’s son-in-law, Jared Kushner, as part of efforts to revive stalled talks aimed at ending the four-year war.
– US-led efforts to end the war have stalled as Washington shifted its focus to the conflict with Iran.
– Trump and Zelenskyy have had a tense relationship, ranging from a heated Oval Office clash in February 2025 to warmer ties in recent months.
– This week, the Ukrainian president met right-wing US influencer and Trump ally Laura Loomer, in another sign of improving relations.
– The 33-year-old conservative commentator, who has millions of social media followers, has recently softened her stance on Ukraine.
– “This is everyday for every Ukrainian, I feel like such an a**hole for minimizing the struggle of Ukrainians for the last five years,” she said of the experience.
– Trump reposted one of Loomer’s social media posts about her Zelensky meeting on Thursday with the caption: “Very good!!
– Zelenskyy is due to meet Trump on the same day as a memorial service in Washington for US Senator Lindsey Graham, a longtime supporter of Ukraine who died earlier this month at the age of 71.
– Trump is due to meet Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on the same day as Zelenskyy.
