Japan-Solomon Islands Summit Meeting
On July 23, commencing at 5:35 p.m. for approximately 25 minutes, Ms. TAKAICHI Sanae, Prime Minister of Japan, held a summit meeting with Hon. Mr. Matthew Copper Wale, Prime Minister of Solomon Islands, who is visiting Japan.
- At the outset, Prime Minister TAKAICHI extended her congratulations on Prime Minister Wale’s assumption of office in May of this year. She then expressed her warm welcome to his visit to Japan shortly after taking office, regarding it as an indication that he attaches importance to traditional partners, including Japan.
- In addition, Prime Minister TAKAICHI stated that she would like to advance cooperation with Solomon Islands, a friend connected by the Pacific Ocean and sharing values such as freedom, democracy, the rule of law, and human rights, under the vision of the Free and Open Indo-Pacific. Prime Minister TAKAICHI also conveyed to Prime Minister Wale Japan’s decision to provide a loan, as well as Japan’s firm commitment to supporting advancing Prime Minister Wale’s policy priorities and promoting the freedom to decide by themselves and enhancing the resilience of Solomon Islands. In response, Prime Minister Wale expressed his appreciation to the Government and people of Japan for Japan’s wide-ranging support, and reaffirmed his commitment to further strengthening the bilateral relationship between Japan and Solomon Islands.
- The two leaders exchanged views on regional affairs in the Indo-Pacific and confirmed the importance of maintaining and strengthening the unity of the Pacific Island region.
- Furthermore, the two leaders agreed to continue cooperating closely, including toward the 11th Pacific Islands Leaders Meeting (PALM11), scheduled to be held in Yokohama City around the summer of 2027.
