Mexico consolidates its presence at the G20 during the second Sherpa Meeting

The Undersecretary of Foreign Affairs, María Teresa Mercado Pérez, participated in the second G20 sherpa meeting, held in Washington, DC, under the current US presidency of the group.

During the meeting held on June 29 and 30, the members addressed strategic issues aimed at strengthening international economic cooperation, with an emphasis on boosting trade, promoting economic growth, harnessing the potential of emerging technologies and consolidating energy security.

In this context, Undersecretary Mercado Pérez emphasized the importance of promoting collaborative frameworks that foster more equitable development, particularly for developing countries and emerging economies. She stated that Mexico is promoting initiatives that help close gaps, strengthen productive capacities, and generate tangible benefits for societies.

He also highlighted the role of innovation as a driver of economic and social transformation, emphasizing the need for its development to be accompanied by policies that guarantee its accessibility and a positive and sustainable impact.

The Undersecretary reiterated Mexico’s willingness to maintain an open and constructive dialogue with the US presidency and the G20 member countries, with the purpose of consolidating agreements that respond effectively to current global challenges.

The work of this meeting is part of the preparatory process for the G20 Leaders’ Summit, scheduled to be held in Miami, Florida, next December, in which Mexico will actively participate.

As part of her agenda, the Undersecretary held meetings with her counterparts from Australia, Brazil, Canada, the United States, France, India, Indonesia, Japan, the United Kingdom, the African Union and the European Union, with whom she exchanged perspectives on common priorities and opportunities for cooperation both within the G20 framework and bilaterally, while conveying Mexico’s interest in assuming the presidency of the group in 2029.

Similarly, he participated in group meetings with the sherpas of emerging economies—which together represent half of the G20 members—as well as with the MIKTA group (Mexico, Indonesia, Republic of Korea, Turkey and Australia), which allowed for strengthening coordination and deepening the dialogue between countries with similar interests.

The Mexican delegation was made up of the head of the Economic Diplomacy Unit, Farid Hannan Goyri; and the general director of Political Planning and G20, Aureny Aguirre O. Sunza.
