On June 4, commencing at 07:30 p.m. for 70 minutes, Mr. MOTEGI Toshimitsu, Minister for Foreign Affairs of Japan, held a Working Dinner (Third Strategic Dialogue between Foreign Ministers) with Dr. Badr Abdelatty, Minister of Foreign Affairs, International Cooperation and Expatriates of Egypt, who was visiting Japan as a guest of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, following the 3rd Foreign Ministers’ Strategic Dialogue held on June 3.
- Regarding the situation in Iran, Minister MOTEGI commended the diplomatic efforts of mediating countries, including Egypt, and stated that what matters most is that the agreement between the U.S. and Iran, including ensuring the free and safe navigation through the Strait of Hormuz, is achieved as soon as possible. He also briefed Minister Abdelatty on Japan’s efforts toward de-escalation. Minister Abdelatty provided an update on the current status of and outlook for the ongoing exchanges between the United States and Iran, and both Ministers concurred on continuing close cooperation.
- Regarding the situation in Gaza, Minister MOTEGI stressed the importance of the steady implementation of the Comprehensive Plan for improving the humanitarian situation in Gaza and for its reconstruction and recovery, and expressed Japan’s hope to work closely with Egypt toward Gaza’s reconstruction. Minister Abdelatty in turn explained Egypt’s mediation efforts toward a ceasefire and reconstruction in Gaza , as well as the future prospects thereof, and both Ministers concurred to continue their cooperation.
- Minister MOTEGI also explained Japan’s contribution to peace and stability in the Middle East through the Multinational Force and Observers (MFO), for which Japan has been providing support, and Minister Abdelatty expressed his appreciation for Japan’s contribution. Both Ministers confirmed their commitment to working together toward stability in the Red Sea region.
- Both Ministers also discussed the Indo-Pacific situation, such as their policies toward North Korea including on the nuclear and missile issues and the abductions issue, as well as UN Security Council reform and other challenges facing the international community, and concurred to continue to coordinate closely with each other.
