The 11th China-UK Strategic Dialogue was held in Beijing.
On June 2, 2026, Wang Yi, member of the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee and Foreign Minister, held the eleventh China-UK Strategic Dialogue with British Foreign Secretary Cooper in Beijing.
Wang Yi stated that at the beginning of this year, Prime Minister Starmer successfully visited China, and the leaders of the two countries reached an important consensus on developing a long-term and stable comprehensive strategic partnership between China and the UK. This new positioning reflects the historical logic of the bilateral relationship, meets the practical needs of their respective development, and outlines a long-term and promising vision of win-win cooperation. Currently, exchanges and cooperation between the two sides in various fields have fully resumed and are gradually getting back on track, which deserves to be cherished. We should further communicate and align our efforts to implement the important consensus reached by the leaders of the two countries, anchor ourselves to the positioning of a long-term and stable comprehensive strategic partnership between China and the UK, strengthen high-level exchanges, promote more practical and tangible results, make contributions to promoting world peace, stability, prosperity and development, and inject more certainty into this turbulent world.
Wang Yi stated that China’s more than 40 years of reform and opening up have proven that openness brings progress, while isolation only leads to regression. China adheres to high-quality development and high-level opening up. The 15th Five-Year Plan is not only China’s own development plan but also a list of opportunities for the world, which highly aligns with the UK’s modern industrial strategy. Both sides can seize these opportunities, work together, and achieve mutual success. He hoped that the UK would provide a fair, just, and non-discriminatory business environment for Chinese enterprises, reasonably define security boundaries, and create a favorable atmosphere for the development of bilateral relations and the deepening of cooperation.
Wang Yi emphasized that the current international situation is complex and turbulent, with the dregs of the law of the jungle resurfacing, and the international community is undergoing the most profound upheaval and transformation since the end of the Cold War. As permanent members of the UN Security Council, China and the UK bear significant responsibility for the future of the world. We should take the lead in following the right path and upholding justice, safeguarding the achievements of the victory in World War II, adhering to the UN Charter, upholding genuine multilateralism, and jointly promoting the building of a more just and equitable global governance system.
Wang Yi also elaborated on China’s position on issues such as Taiwan and Hong Kong.
Cooper stated that during Prime Minister Starmer’s visit to China in January, the two leaders established a long-term, stable, and comprehensive strategic partnership between the UK and China. This positioning is crucial and fully in line with the interests of both sides. Given the current volatile and complex international situation, as permanent members of the UN Security Council, the UK and China need to strengthen dialogue and cooperation more than ever before to jointly address challenges. The UK is willing to work with China, along with the direction set by the two leaders, to maintain close high-level exchanges, advance institutional dialogue, and deepen cooperation in areas such as trade, finance, energy, artificial intelligence, and climate change. The UK’s policy on the Taiwan issue since the establishment of diplomatic relations with China remains unchanged and will not change. The UK is willing to continue to work with China through candid dialogue, constructively manage differences, and promote the healthy and stable development of UK-China relations.
The two sides also exchanged views on issues such as Iran and Ukraine.
