Implementation of additional monitoring under the framework of the International Atomic Energy Agency regarding the discharge of ALPS-treated water into the ocean (results)
As part of the additional monitoring under the IAEA framework, which was agreed upon between Japan and the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) in September 2024, IAEA officials and experts from third-country analytical laboratories visited Japan and collected samples on May 29.
- On May 29, at the Tokyo Electric Power Company’s Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant site, IAEA officials and experts from analytical institutions in China, South Korea, Russia, and Switzerland collected samples of ALPS-treated water before dilution with seawater from measurement and verification tanks.
- This additional monitoring was the eighth to be conducted since October 2024.
- The Japanese government will continue to cooperate with the IAEA to provide information to the international community with high transparency, and will strive to foster greater understanding both domestically and internationally regarding the safety of releasing ALPS-treated water into the ocean.
(Reference 1) Measurement and verification tank
This tank receives ALPS-treated water from storage tanks and other facilities within the Tokyo Electric Power Company’s Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant premises, and circulates and agitates the water to collect representative analytical samples for analysis before dilution and release.
