Wang Yi meets with UN Secretary-General Guterres

On May 26, 2026, local time, Wang Yi, member of the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee and Foreign Minister, met with UN Secretary-General António Guterres on the sidelines of the UN Security Council High-Level Meeting in New York.

Wang Yi conveyed the warm greetings of Chinese leaders to Guterres, noting that the current international situation is rife with chaos and regional conflicts are erupting on multiple fronts, posing a severe challenge to the United Nations while also placing higher expectations on it. As the rotating president of the Security Council this month, China proposed holding a high-level Security Council meeting on the theme of “Upholding the Purposes and Principles of the UN Charter and Strengthening the International System with the UN at its Core,” hoping to work with all countries to reaffirm the original intent of the Charter, revitalize the authority of the United Nations, and thus build the broadest possible consensus. Judging from the statements of all parties, everyone agreed that the UN Charter should be upheld, the status of the United Nations should be maintained, and UN reform should be supported.

Wang Yi stated that this year marks the 55th anniversary of the restoration of the People’s Republic of China’s legitimate seat in the United Nations. China highly appreciates the Secretariat’s firm adherence to the one-China principle and its compliance with UN General Assembly Resolution 2758. As a staunch supporter of the UN’s cause, China is willing to continue upholding multilateralism, firmly safeguarding the international system with the UN at its core, and continuously deepening cooperation with the UN in areas such as promoting South-South cooperation, reforming the international economic and financial system, addressing climate change, artificial intelligence, and regional hotspots. China will support the UN with concrete actions, revitalize the UN, and strengthen the UN, continuously empowering global governance with China’s governance model and injecting stronger momentum into building a community with a shared future for mankind.

Wang Yi stated that since taking office, Secretary-General Guterres has upheld multilateralism, worked tirelessly for peace, and spoken out for justice, earning recognition from the international community. China appreciates this and invites Guterres to visit China this year.

Guterres asked Wang Yi to convey his warm greetings to the Chinese leaders, and appreciated China’s initiative to convene a high-level Security Council meeting, believing it fully demonstrates China’s firm support for multilateralism and the United Nations. He thanked China for its consistent upholding of the UN Charter and international law. Guterres stated that development and peace are two sides of the same coin, mutually reinforcing each other. China is the most reliable partner for sustainable development and a strong participant in UN peacekeeping operations. The UN appreciates China’s series of global initiatives in the fields of security, peace, and development, and looks forward to working together to eliminate conflict, ensure the victory of peace, the victory of international law, and the victory of multilateralism. The UN firmly adheres to UN General Assembly Resolution 2758, which embodies the One-China principle, and there is no room for ambiguity on this point. The UN is willing to continue deepening cooperation with China in areas such as international economic and financial system reform, sustainable development, climate change, and artificial intelligence, promoting the balanced development of the UN’s three pillars of operations: peace, development, and human rights.
