This evening, I hosted India’s Minister of External Affairs, the Honourable Dr. Subrahmanyam Jaishankar, at the Diplomatic Centre for a working late-supper meeting focused on matters of mutual importance and advancing the shared interests of Trinidad and Tobago and India.

Our engagement forms part of the continued deepening of relations between our two nations, rooted in shared history, friendship and mutual respect.

Today, I had the honour of welcoming India’s Minister of External Affairs, the Honourable Dr. Subrahmanyam Jaishankar to Trinidad and Tobago as we celebrate the deep and enduring partnership between our two nations.

I delivered a statement in Parliament reaffirming the profound historical, cultural and strategic ties that continue to unite both nations.

I reflected on the enduring bond forged through our shared history – from the journey across the Kala Pani to the modern partnership now built on cooperation, innovation and sustainable development.

Trinidad and Tobago and India have signed several agreements advancing collaboration in trade and investment, healthcare, renewable energy, tourism, digital transformation, agriculture, education and cultural exchange.

India has also honoured and fulfilled key commitments made during the historic visit of the Honourable Prime Minister of India, Shri Narendra Modi

to Trinidad and Tobago in 2025, including:

  • The delivery of 2,000 laptops for students across all educational districts
  • Support for over 800 citizens through the prosthetic limb initiative
  • The upcoming launch of the National Prosthetics Centre in Penal
  • The provision of dialysis units and sea ambulances to strengthen healthcare delivery
  • Support for the agro-processing facility at Brechin Castle, Couva

Today, bilateral trade between Trinidad and Tobago and India exceeds TT$1.2 billion annually, with growing opportunities in agriculture, healthcare, tourism, finance, infrastructure and non-energy exports.

As I stated in Parliament, our relationship is grounded in practical cooperation, shared development and the common determination to shape our future with confidence, dignity and mutual prosperity.
