French President Emmanuel Macron says he will speak with his Iranian counterpart Masoud Pezeshkian later today to push Tehran to reopen the Strait of Hormuz.

– “I will be speaking with the Iranian president shortly,” Macron told reporters at a press conference in Yerevan, adding that France had long advocated for “the restoration of freedom of navigation” in the vital waterway.

France, together with the UK, has been leading efforts to establish a defensive international naval coalition to ensure freedom of navigation and secure shipping in the strait, through which about 20 percent of the world’s oil passes in peace time.
