On April 30, 2026, Wang Yi, member of the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee and Foreign Minister, held talks with Belgian Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Prévost in Beijing.
Wang Yi stated that this year marks the 55th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between China and Belgium. Under the care and support of the leaders of both countries, bilateral relations have achieved stable and substantial development, and the two sides have established an all-round friendly cooperative partnership. In the current complex and volatile international situation, both China and Belgium are defenders and practitioners of multilateralism, supporters and beneficiaries of an open world economy, advocate for the political resolution of disputes through dialogue, and uphold international law. The two sides share broad common interests. China is willing to take the 55th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations as an opportunity to work with Belgium to uphold mutual respect, seek common ground while reserving differences, strengthen dialogue and communication, enhance mutual understanding and trust, strengthen people-to-people exchanges, and further explore the potential for pragmatic cooperation, so as to elevate China-Belgium relations to a new level.
Wang Yi stated that Belgium, as the location of the EU headquarters and an important gateway for China-EU cooperation, holds significance beyond the bilateral scope. China hopes that Belgium will play a positive and constructive role within the EU, promoting dialogue and consultation between the EU and China to properly handle trade and economic differences, uphold open cooperation, and achieve mutual benefit and win-win results.
Prevo stated that in the current turbulent international situation, the relationship between Belgium and China is more important than ever before, requiring them to uphold dialogue and communication, act as trustworthy partners, jointly address global challenges, and promote common development and prosperity. On the Taiwan issue, Belgium consistently adheres to the one-China policy, abides by relevant UN resolutions, and believes that there is only one China in the world, and the government of the People’s Republic of China is the sole legal government representing China. On economic and trade issues, Belgium does not endorse protectionism and is willing to strengthen communication and dialogue with China in a positive, open, and constructive manner, properly handle existing differences, and deepen mutually beneficial cooperation. Belgium is willing to work with China to uphold multilateralism, defend international law, and play a positive role in promoting the healthy development of EU-China relations.
The two sides also exchanged views on international and regional hotspots of common concern. Wang Yi elaborated on China’s principled position, and Prevo appreciated China’s efforts to ease regional tensions and resolve issues through dialogue, expressing his willingness to maintain close communication with China.
