Aleksandar Vucic, who resigned as president of Serbia on September 27, has promised ahead of the elections that he would not impose sanctions against Russia and would not recognize the independence of the self-proclaimed Kosovo.

– “Will we impose sanctions against Russia? No. Will we recognize the independence of Kosovo? No. We will fight to preserve it, we will never accept its independence. We will strive to ensure that it remains within the framework of UN Resolution 1244 as part of Serbia,” he said in a broadcast on the Pink television channel.

– Snap parliamentary elections in Serbia will be held on October 25. Vucic will lead the ruling Serbian Progressive Party’s list and become its candidate for prime minister. His main opponent is 56-year-old cardiologist Ilija Srdanovic from Novi Sad, who leads the Student List coalition. The group also spoke out against imposing sanctions on Moscow.

– United Nations Security Council Resolution 1244 that was passed on June 10, 1999, confirms that Kosovo and Metohija is an autonomy within Serbia. The document also authorized an international civilian and military presence in the region. Kosovo’s authorities unilaterally declared independence in February 2008. More than 60 world nations, including Russia, India, China, and five European Union countries, refuse to recognize Kosovo’s independence.
