Press Release
Clarification Issued by the African Union Commission
The African Union Commission has taken note of the observations expressed by the Arab Republic of Egypt regarding the statement issued by the Commission on October 1, 2026, concerning regional tensions.
The Commission wishes to reaffirm its steadfast commitment to the principles of the African Union, particularly the principle of respect for the sovereignty of states, their national unity, and territorial integrity, as well as the principle of non-interference in their internal affairs, and its consistent emphasis on political solutions over military ones.
The Commission also confirms that its statements and positions fall exclusively within the framework of its mandate aimed at supporting peace, security, and stability on the continent, and do not seek to comment on the internal developments of any member state. In no way was the intention of the aforementioned statement to attribute responsibility for ongoing events to any of the neighboring countries; rather, it was simply a call to de-escalate tensions following the expulsion of diplomats from the three capitals.
The call for restraint, maintaining open channels of communication, and resorting to diplomatic means aligns with the institutional responsibility entrusted to the Commission under the Constitutive Act of the African Union and the Protocol of the African Union Commission, with the aim of preventing any misunderstandings, escalations, or expansions of tensions that could impact regional stability.
The African Union Commission attaches particular importance to its close relationship with the Arab Republic of Egypt and values its positions, as a founding member state of the African Union and a key partner in promoting peace, security, integration, and development on the continent.
