Finland and France are strengthening their defense cooperation.
Our defense cooperation took a step forward already last summer when France announced that it is making forces available for NATO’s forward land forces in Finland (Forward Land Forces, FLF Finland). Today, we took a new step when Finland joined France’s nuclear deterrence.
The initiative is primarily about strengthening European security. It strengthens Europe’s responsibility for its own defense and contributes to preventing escalation.
The initiative does not replace and does not overlap with NATO’s nuclear deterrence. Finland’s primary starting point is to act as part of NATO and the European Union.
Finland does not intend to station nuclear weapons on its territory in peacetime.
