Pakistan’s UN representative says the escalating conflict in Yemen will have “potentially far-reaching consequences” for both the country and the wider region.
– Asim Iftikhar Ahmad said there was an “urgent need to prevent further escalation and preserve the space for diplomacy.” Pakistan has been a key mediator in the ongoing Iran-US conflict and signed a mutual defence pact last month with Turkiye and Saudi Arabia, an adversary of the Iran-backed Yemeni group.
– “The relative calm maintained since 2022 was the result of painstaking diplomatic efforts. It must not be allowed to unravel. A return to hostilities would further compound the suffering of the Yemeni people and risk drawing the country deeper into wider regional tensions,” he said.
– “The immediate priority must therefore be de-escalation and restoration of a credible political process. Pakistan therefore supports an inclusive Yemeni-led, Yemeni-owned political process under the United Nations’s auspices.”
